Minnesota-Crookston edges SDSU in equestrian

Minnesota-Crookston used advantages in equitation over fences and horsemanship to defeat South Dakota State, 9-7, in a Varsity Equestrian head-to-head competition Sunday at the Swiftel Center.

SDSU ended the weekend with a split of its weekend homestand, evening its record in head-to-head competitions at 1-1. The Jackrabbits defeated Fresno State (Calif.), 13-7, on Saturday.

UMC opened Sunday's competition with a 4-0 sweep in equitation over fences. The Jackrabbits narrowed the gap to 5-3 by winning three of four points in equitation on the flat as all three of their winning riders each posted scores in the 80s. Ashley Marrin and Laura Hoff each tallied scores of 85, while Lindsay Harr opened the event with an 83.

The Golden Eagles built a commanding 8-4 lead by winning three of four sections of horsemanship. Meghan Gunn was the lone Jackrabbit to record a victory, posting a high-point ride of 78.5.

SDSU came away with three of the four points in reining, but needed a sweep to force a tie. Helen Lauth (78.5), Jordanne Blair (76) and Molly Seidel (75) were the winning riders for the Jackrabbits.

The Jackrabbits return to IHSA competition with a multi-team English show at Minnesota-Crookston on Oct. 26-26.
