DES MOINES, Iowa ? The Defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Drake Bulldogs beat South Dakota State 75-65 on Sunday in Des Moines in the second round of the Cancun Challenge.
Junior Garrett Callahan led all-players and three Jackrabbits in double figures with 21 points, but Drake's Jonathan Cox led a well-balanced Bulldog attack with 15 points. A total of four Drake starters and one reserve all scored at least 12 points in the win, which improves the Bulldogs to 2-1.
Sophomore Clint Sargent scored 14 for the Jacks, who fall to 1-3 on the season, junior Kai Williams added 13 points in the loss.
The Jacks led by two early on a pair of early Williams baskets, but a Cox three-pointer gave the lead back to the home team and sparked a 10-0 run that ended with the Bulldogs up 12-4.
Drake increased its lead to as many as 11-points in the half and the Jacks got as close as four-points on one occasion, but they could get no closer as Drake took a 32-23 lead into the locker room.
Two Callahan free-throws got the Jacks to within seven to start the second half, but the Bulldogs quickly got the lead back into double-digits, where it remained for the majority of the half.
SDSU would get as close as seven-points again with 14 minutes left to play, but Drake scored the next five and never looked back in the 75-65 win.
The Jacks shot 48 percent (25-of-52) for the game, including a 43.5 percent effort from three-point range (10-of-23).
Drake shot just 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the floor and 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point range, but the Bulldogs did out-rebound the Jacks 33-28 and won the turnover battle 16-7, including a 13-2 edge in steals.
Sunday's game marked the second of two games in the Cancun Challenge played in the United States. SDSU's two games in Cancun come on Saturday against Central Florida and Sunday against Central Arkansas.
Before the Jacks head south though, they host Upper Iowa on Tuesday in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
