ROCHESTER, Mich. ? The South Dakota State University men's 800-yard freestyle relay team broke the school record in the event during the second of the three day Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships.
Mark Garrigues, Ryan Willett, Josh Mueller and Mark Sandager swam a time of 7 minutes 3.14 seconds in the 800 freestyle to break the two year old record. The Jacks broke the school record in the 200 freestyle relay during the first day of competition.
Mueller was the highest finishing Jackrabbit during day two as his third place finish of 4:13.37 in the 400-yard IM is a team best this season.
Garrigues swam a season best time in the 200-yard freestyle concluding the race at 1:43.16.
A trio of Jackrabbits rounded out the finals in the 100-yard backstroke as Chris Holzwarth, 54.43 seconds, Matt Josephson, 54.96 seconds, and Sandager, 55.13 seconds, finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the event respectively. Each swimmer's time was good enough to be in the top five of all 100 backstroke times this season for SDSU.
Freshman Blake Gipson won the B final in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.57 seconds. It is the only sub one minute time in the event for SDSU this season.
Oakland has a commanding lead with 673 points while Centenary (La.) is second totaling 393 points. Eastern Illinois with 307 points holds a slim advantage on Western Illinois, 298 points, for the third spot. IUPUI comes in fifth with 211 points while SDSU is last with a total of 196 points through day two of the championships.
The Jacks finish the Summit League Championships Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
