LINCOLN, Neb. ? Jake Opitz's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 2-all tie, lifting Nebraska to a 7-3 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field.
Nebraska improved to 11-2 overall, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 4-7 on the season.
The Cornhuskers grabbed an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, when D.J. Belfonte doubled and later scored on a wild pitch by Jackrabbit starter
Mike Robinson.
Nebraska made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the fourth inning before the Jackrabbits tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by
Korby Mintken, which scored
Stephen Turner and
Nick Adams.
After Opitz's double off SDSU reliever
Isaac Johnson made it a 4-2 game in favor of Nebraska, the Jackrabbits got back to within a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Turner.
The Cornhuskers put the game away a run in the home half of the sixth and two more in the eighth on run-scoring base hits by Dan Johnston and Ben Kline.
Nebraska reliever Michael Mariot picked up the victory in relief. Seven different Cornhusker pitchers worked in the game and combined for 10 strikeouts.
Mintken, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, recorded two of SDSU's six hits.
First baseman Craig Corriston led Nebraska with three of the Cornhuskers 13 hits.
SDSU returns to action with a three-game series March 15-17 at Air Force.
