Jacks hold off UTPA for 11-10 victory

HUNTSVILLE, Texas ? South Dakota State built a 7-1 lead only to hold off a late rally by Texas-Pan American for an 11-10 baseball victory on the opening day of the Hillcrest Ford Bearkat Classic hosted by Sam Houston State University.
The Jackrabbits improved to 2-5 overall, while UTPA dropped to 2-7.
SDSU got on the board with a four-run first inning. Tyson Fisher plated Tim Hanigan and Korby Mintken with the first two runs on a triple to center field. Fisher later scored on a balk and Billy Stitz drove in the final run of the frame with a base hit.
The Broncs countered with a three-run home half of the first inning against Jackrabbit starter Jared Koch, taking advantage of an SDSU error and five singles.
The Jackrabbits added three runs in the second inning on a Nick Adams sacrifice fly and two-run double by Stephen Turner.
After the Jackrabbits scored another run on a balk in the fifth inning, SDSU made it a 10-4 game in the sixth on RBI singles from Fisher and Stitz.
UTPA's comeback started with a three-run sixth inning. Bonham Hough doubled in two runs and Jordan Rutenbar followed with a single up the middle to score Hough and chase Koch from the game. Matt Spinar recorded the final out of the inning.
Stitz added what proved to be a valuable insurance run for the Jackrabbits in the eighth inning with his third hit and third RBI of the game.
In the ninth, UTPA scored its first run on a groundout, then received a two-run single from Nick Bourn. The Broncs would load the bases with one out against SDSU closer Matt Baerlocher, who was lifted in favor of Kirby Morsching. With Tim Tefft at the plate, Morsching induced a ground ball back to the mound and was able to get a force out at home. He then retired Hough on a ground ball to second to end the game and earn the save.
UTPA held a 16-14 advantage in hits, although every Jackrabbit player to have more than one at-bat recorded a hit. Mintken, Fisher and Erik DeJong all had two hits each for SDSU.
The Jackrabbits also stole five bases in the game.
Koch picked up the victory, striking out three and walking none in 5 2/3 innings. Of the seven runs he allowed, only one was earned.
SDSU returns to action Saturday with two games against host Sam Houston State. Game times are 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
