HUNTSVILLE, Texas ?
Caleb Thielbar pitched eight strong innings and
Korby Mintken was a double away from they cycle as the South Dakota State University baseball team salvaged a split of a two-game set with Sam Houston State with an 8-1 victory Saturday night.
Sam Houston State took advantage of four South Dakota State errors in winning the opening gam, 9-3, at the Ford Bearkat Classic.
SDSU moved to 3-6 on the season, while SHSU is 8-4 overall.
The Jackrabbits provided all the run support Thielbar would need in the first inning on a two-run single by
Nick Adams.
SHSU countered with a run in the bottom of the first as Keith Stein tripled with one out and Bobby Verbick added a sacrifice fly.
In the second inning,
Max Fenske led off with a double down the left-field line and came around to score on a triple by Mintken.
Fenske, who was 3-for-4, contributed a two-run single in the fifth inning and Mintken, who was 4-for-6, led off the sixth inning with his third home run of the season.
Meanwhile, Thielbar kept the Bearkats off the board. The left-hander bounced back from a rough outing Wednesday at Arkansas, scattering nine hits and striking out four to even his record at 1-1.
Billy Stitz,
Tyson Fisher and Adams each added two-hits for the Jackrabbits, who out-hit SHSU, 15-10.
In the opener, the Bearkats built an early 3-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first and added a pair of runs on a two-run double by Keith Stein in the second inning.
SDSU got on the board in the bottom of the second after
Tyson Fisher hit a leadoff double and Stitz followed two batters later with a run-scoring triple to right field.
Sam Houston State broke open the game with three unearned runs in the fourth inning, then added two more in the fifth for an 8-1 advantage.
The Jackrabbits scored their final two runs in the fifth on a double by
Craig Parry.
SDSU starter
Christian Larson suffered the loss after lasting three innings, falling to 0-2 on the season. He allowed three runs and a pair of walks, while striking out two. Only four of the nine runs given up by Jackrabbit pitchers were earned.
Bearkat starter Zach Neal struck out four and gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings to earn the victory.
SHSU held an 11-10 advantage in hits. Jaime Rohlmeier led the Bearkats at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort and scored two runs.
With a double and triple in the game, Fisher was one of three Jackrabbits with two hits, along with Mintken and freshman
Erik DeJong.
SDSU closes out play in the Ford Bearkat Classic with an 11 a.m. matchup Sunday against Saint Louis (Mo.).
