CEDAR CITY, Utah ? Southern Utah scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning to claim a 6-2 victory over South Dakota State in the final game of a four-game baseball series Saturday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds, who won three of four games in the series, improved to 21-15 overall and 8-3 in The Summit League. SDSU dropped to 14-19 overall, 6-3 in league play.
SDSU scored first, plating a run in the top of the third inning. Billy Stitz led off the inning with a bunt single, moved to second on a Jesse Ayala sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit by Nick Adams.
SUU tied the game with a run in the third, then batted around in the fourth inning. Joe Wright cleared the bases with a three-run double against Jackrabbit starter Isaac Johnson and later scored on a base hit by Cameron Nelson.
SDSU's final run of the game came in the eighth inning as Ayala reached on an error and later scored on a groundout off the bat of Tony Martin.
Thunderbird starter Mac Nelson pitched six innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out four.
For SDSU, Johnson lasted three-plus innings as he fell to 0-3 on the year. The Jackrabbit bullpen contingent of Matt Spinar, Matt Baerlocher and Mike Robinson combined to give up only one run in five innings of work.
Korby Mintken and Stephen Turner each had two hits for the Jackrabbits, who managed eight hits in the game ? all singles.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to make their home debut Monday against Presentation College. First pitch is set for 3:35 p.m. at Huether Field on the SDSU campus.
