Craig Parry hit two home runs and drove in nine runs, helping the South Dakota State University baseball team christen the new Huether Field with a 22-3 seven-inning victory over Presentation College Monday afternoon.
Parry, a senior from Colstrip, Mont., went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in the first inning, then added a grand slam and two-run double as part of a 10-run fourth inning for the Jackrabbits, who improved to 15-19 overall. Parry's grand slam was his second of the season and third by a Jackrabbit player in 2008.
Presentation dropped to 7-13 on the season.
SDSU, which was playing its first on-campus game since 2001, wasted little time in putting runs on the board. Each of the first five Jackrabbit hitters reached and scored as
Tyson Fisher singled in two runs before Parry hit his three-run blast to right field.
After Presentation scored its first run of the game on a Matt Monson sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning, the Jackrabbits countered with four more runs in the home half of the inning. Fisher doubled in the first run before SDSU strung together four consecutive two-out hits, including run-scoring singles by
Justin Morar,
Max Fenske and
Nick Adams.
The Jackrabbits sent 15 batters to the plate in their 10-run fourth inning, recording nine hits and taking advantage of two Saint errors. Adams and
Stephen Turner each doubled in runs and
Jesse Ayala added a pinch-hit single.
Presentation's final two runs came on a Monson two-run home run in the fifth inning. The Jackrabbits tallied the final runs of the game in the sixth inning as
Erik DeJong delivered a bases-loaded triple.
The Jackrabbits pounded out 21 hits, with seven different players recording at least two hits. Adams, Fisher and Parry all tallied three hits apiece.
Freshman
Trever Vermeulen worked the first four innings for SDSU to pick up his first collegiate victory. He allowed five hits and a walk, striking out three.
Sam Pieczynski struck out four as he pitched the final three innings.
SDSU continues its homestand Tuesday by hosting Dakota Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Huether Field.
