Jackrabbits sweep twinbill from Gents

The Jackrabbits won the opener, 13-6, in improving to 10-16 overall and 3-0 in The Summit League. Centenary dropped to 16-9 overall, 0-3 in league play.
SDSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run triple by Craig Parry. Nick Adams led off the frame with a base hit and Tim Hanigan walked before Parry delivered his two-out hit.
The Jackrabbits extended the lead in the third inning. Hanigan led off the inning by reaching on an error and Tyson Fisher and Tony Martin walked to load the bases for Stitz, who launched a pitch from Jeremy Sheehan over the fence in right field for his fourth home run of the season and first collegiate grand slam.
Koch, meanwhile, was cruising on the mound for the Jackrabbits. A junior from Cherokee,
SDSU tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to provide the final margin.
Jesse Ayala went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles for the Jackrabbits, who out-hit Centenary, 6-4.
In the opener, SDSU scored the final 10 runs of the game en route to its 13-6 victory.
Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Jackrabbits grabbed the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stitz singled in the first run of the inning and Ayala followed two batters later with a two-run double. Ayala later scored on a base hit by Nick Adams.
Jackrabbit starter Caleb Thielbar gutted out six innings to earn his third victory of the season. After giving up four runs in the top of the fourth, Thielbar appeared on the verge of being chased from the game as the Gents loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. However, Thielbar, induced a double-play grounder to prevent further damage, then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
Freshman Matt Spinar hurled three strong innings, allowing only a solo home run to Garrett DeRooy in the ninth inning, as he earned his first collegiate save. He struck out two.
SDSU led 3-1 after one inning on a run-scoring single by Korby Mintken and two-run single by Tony Martin.
The Jackrabbits scored in each of the last five innings they batted, scoring twice on a run-scoring triple by Parry and another run-scoring single by Martin. SDSU added two in the eighth on back-to-back solo home runs by Fisher and Parry. For Fisher, it marked the sixth consecutive game in which he hit a home run ? a streak that was snapped in Saturday's nitecap.
SDSU held a 15-12 advantage in hits. Martin was 3-for-4, while Adams, Hanigan, Mintken, Parry and Ayala all had two hits.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series Sunday with a 12:05 p.m. matinee.
