CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? Mackenzie Angner set a new career-high with 24 digs and tied a career-high with 28 kills, but South Dakota came up on the short end of a five set match on Friday, falling to Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 in the finale at the Hurricane Invitational.
SDSU grinded out a 31-29 win in the first set and then cruised to a 25-15 win in the third set, while VCU hung on to win the second set 25-22, the fourth set 25-18 and the fifth set 18-16.
The Jacks fifth straight loss drops them to 1-5 on the season, while the Rams improve to 3-1 with the win.
VCU started the scoring and built a three-point lead at 9-6, only to see the Jacks come back to tie the set at 10, 11 and eventually at 15-all.
The Rams broke the 15-all tie with a 4-0 run and lead 23-19 when SDSU went on its own 4-0 run tie the set at 23. VCU scored the next point to set-up the first of its five set points at 24-23, but the Jacks hung tough and fended off all five attempts.
SDSU got two set-point chances and Kelli Fiegen made sure the Jacks did not need a third, ending the set with a kill that gave them a 31-29 first set win.
The Rams scored the first two points of the second set and despite a pair of early ties, led for the entire set, only to see the Jacks come back to tie the match at 19 and at 20-all.
An Ellyce Youngren kill put the Jacks up 21-20 and a VCU error put the Jacks up 22-20 and prompted a timeout from the Rams bench.
Whatever the Rams talked about at the timeout worked, because they scored the next five points to win the set 25-22.
VCU came into the third set with all of the momentum, but the Jacks quickly took it back. SDSU went up 2-1 on one of the Rams 16 service errors in the match and never looked back, slowly building its lead to the 25-15 final score.
Just as the Jacks stole the momentum in the third set, the Rams stole it right back in the fourth set, erasing an early 2-0 deficit to come back and tie the match at two games each with a 25-18 win.
The Jacks vaulted out to a 3-0 lead in the shortened fifth and final set, and despite five ties, did not trail until the Rams went up 15-14. Two more ties followed at 15 and 16-all, but the Jacks committed two of their ten service errors on match points and VCU finally capitalized to win the set 18-16 and the match 3-2.
The Jacks try to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when they play their first of two matches in the Seminole Tri-Tournament hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
SDSU opens with North Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday and then plays the host Seminoles on Sunday at 11 a.m.
