South Dakota State handed Summit League front-runner Western Illinois its first Summit League loss on Thursday night with a well balanced 64-55 win in front of a boisterous 1,138 Frost Arena faithful.
Dale Moss led five Jackrabbits in double figures with 13 points off the bench on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting and added seven rebounds for SDSU, who improves to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in The Summit League with the win. Thanks, in large part, to Moss' output, the Jackrabbit bench outscored the Leatherneck's bench 16-4.
Kai Williams finished the game with ten points and ten rebounds to for the game's only double-double, his fourth of the season. Anthony Cordova and Garrett Callahan both finished the game with 12 points.
Davie DuBois led Western Illinois, who falls to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in league play, with 21 points, Josh Rivers added 15 points in the loss.
The Jacks committed a season-low six turnovers and shot 52.3 percent from the floor on 23-of-44 shooting, they also went 15-of-18 from the free throw line to balance out a cold night from beyond the arc, where they finished 3-of-14, 21.4 percent.
The Leathernecks committed just eight turnovers, but shot 39.7 percent from the floor on 23-of-58 shooting, including a 6-for-14 effort from long distance, and shot just four free throws on the night, making three of them.
Western Illinois did win the battle on the boards 31-27, including a 17-8 edge in offensive rebounds.
The first half featured six ties, six lead changes and a pair of runs by both teams. A Payton Tivis layup with 11:17 left in the half gave the Jacks a 14-9 lead, but WIU came back with a 15-0 run that lasted nearly five minutes to take a 24-14 lead with 4:49 left on the first half clock.
The Jacks answered by holing the Leathernecks scoreless for the rest of the half, ending the first frame on an 11-0 run to take a 25-24 lead into the lockerroom.
Western pulled down a trio of offensive rebounds on its first possession of the second half before DuBois finally got the bucket that put the Leathernecks back up one at 26-25.
Five ties and three lead changes later, Williams put the Jacks up for good on the final lead change of the game, a three-pointer that gave SDSU a 43-40 lead.
WIU would get as close as one point at 45-44, but SDSU would let them get no closer, as the Jacks went 9-for-10 at the line down the stretch to secure the win.
The Jacks return to action on Saturday, when the host IUPUI in the Lamb Bonanza at 7:30 p.m., following the women's game against the Jaguars at 5 p.m.
IUPUI enters the game with a 9-6 overall record, 2-2 in The Summit League after a 55-52 loss at North Dakota State on Thursday.
