Brookings native Courtney Higgins scored a goal and added an assist for her second multi-point scoring performance in a row to lead the Jacks to a 3-0 win over Southern Utah in Summit League soccer action Sunday afternoon.
"It was a great weekend for us. Scoring eight goals and getting two shutouts was big for the girls and something we haven't done in a while" said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "It was big having girls step up for other players on the team who are injured and sick and provide the team with quality minutes in the win."
The win improves the Jacks to 9-6-2 on the year and 6-2 in the Summit League. The Thunderbirds fall to 3-12-2 and 1-5-1 in the league.
Higgins entered the game and scored a goal just over a minute after checking in. Danni Healy centered a pass and Higgins put her foot on it to score her third goal of the year from three yards out, making the score 1-0 at the half.
In the second, the Jacks came out poised and knocked home a goal just over a minute into the half. Tory Schiltgen dribbled around her defender and deeked another as she found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Brittany Sipp would end the scoring at 3-0 as she sent a pass from Higgins past the SUU goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
In a close battle throughout, the Jacks led 10-9 in shots and 10-1 in shots on goal.
Brie Rogers got the shutout win in goal for the Jacks. She made one save in the contest and improves her record to 4-3-1. SUU goalkeeper Breana Fitzgerald allowed three goals and made seven saves in 90 minutes of work.
The win over SUU sets up a chance for the Jacks to secure at least a share of the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, should they defeat North Dakota State when they host them at Fishback Soccer Park, Saturday at 1 p.m.
