ST. THOMAS, USVI - Only one team can win all three games at the Paradise Jam and only one team can lose all three. Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits, they represent the latter, as East Carolina erased a 20-point South Dakota State lead to beat the Jacks 82-73 on the final day of the tournament.
"It's disheartening. I know that the players are very disappointed. We're all disappointed to play in the seventh/eighth place game no matter who is in the tournament," said SDSU head coach Scott Nagy after the game. "This is a great tournament and we knew coming here that we were going to play three great teams and we could play great and leave 0-3 or go 3-0. We knew it was going to be a difficult tournament and hopefully we learned some things from it."
The Jacks fall to 2-3 with the loss, ECU improves to 2-4.
Trailing 2-0 after a pair of early free throws, the Jacks took the lead on a Griffan Callahan three-pointer on the Jacks first trip down the floor. SDSU quickly built its lead to as many as 20 points at 29-9 with 7:49 remaining in the first half.
The Pirates chipped away at the lead for the rest of the half, and trailed by 12 at 40-28 at halftime.
ECU stopped chipping to in the second half and started scoring in chunks. Two early steals from Brock Young turned into three pointers by Jontae Sherrod, which eventually turned into a 15-0 Pirate run to start the second half.
Garrett Callahan ended the run, and proceeded to score all 11 points in an 11-0 SDSU run that ended with the Jacks up 51-43 with 15:20 left to play. A trio of lead changes followed over the next 13 minutes, before ECU broke a 71-all tie with a tip-in with 2:23 remaining in the game.
Two of the next three Jackrabbit possessions ended in turnovers, forcing the Jacks to foul. ECU hit all four shots from the line down the stretch to secure the win.
Garrett Callahan led the Jacks with 18 points, including a 5-for-7 effort from three point range. Clint Sargent went 4-of-8 from long distance in scoring 14 points. He also led the Jacks with five rebounds. Nate Wolters tied his career-high with 11 points.
Sherrod led ECU with 23 points, Darius Morrow added 16 points for the Pirates in the win.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday, when they host Denver in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
