FOREST GROVE, Ore. ? The Jackrabbits ended their four-match skid by knocking out the Pacific Boxers 43-9 at the Pacific Athletic Center Friday afternoon.
Weston Ginther put the Jackrabbits on the board to open the match with a 7-2 victory at 165 pounds.
After that, every Jacks victory came with bonus points as SDSU jumped out to a 31-0 lead. The Jacks dropped only two matches, one by decision in the last match of the day at 157 pounds with the other by forfeit at 133 pounds.
At the upper weights, the Jacks recorded a pair of wins by fall and a pair of forfeits. Justin Retallic at 174 pounds and Jeremy Swier at 197 pounds notched pins to help the Jacks extend the score to 27-0.
Alan Marvin picked up a major decision while wrestling at 125 pounds for SDSU. Marvin improves his record to 12-11 on the season.
After surrendering the 133-pound weight class, freshman Dustin Walraven recorded a pin at the 1:27 mark of the first period and Nick Flynn won by forfeit at 149 pounds to end SDSU's scoring.
The match improved the Jacks to 8-9-1 on the season while the Boxers fall to 1-12.
SDSU vs. Portland State
PORTLAND, Ore. ? South Dakota State wrestling team recorded three wins by fall and improved to 2-0 on the day as they defeated Portland State 30-16 Friday night at the Stott Center.
The Jacks surrendered a major decision in the first match of the night at 165 pounds but battled back to record pins at 174, 197 and heavyweight to take control of the match.
Freshman Scott Elliott got things rolling for the Jacks as he notched a pin at 174 pounds. Elliott improves to 25-5 overall and 9-2 in duals this season.
No. 14 Tyler Sorenson kept his perfect record intact with a pin at 197 pounds. Sorenson's pin at 3:15 put the Jacks in the lead for good as he improves to 11-0 on the season.
Jason Stripling followed Sorenson's performance with a pin of his own at heavyweight at the 2:49 mark as he improves to 30-9 on the season. Stripling's win marks the 29th time an SDSU wrestler has broke the 30 win mark in a season. Stripling also moves within one win of 22nd on SDSU's all-time wins list with a career record of 81-39.
The win brings SDSU back to .500 on the season at 9-9-1 while Portland State falls to 6-9 overall.
The Jacks will round out the season at home against North Dakota State on Friday and against No. 21 Northern Iowa on Saturday with both matches starting at 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
