MURRAY, Ky. ? The South Dakota State University baseball team couldn't come up with the big hit in the late innings Friday, dropping its season opener, 6-3, at Murray State (Ky.).
The Jackrabbits out-hit the Racers, 12-9, but stranded 13 runners in the nine-inning contest. SDSU left two runners on base in each of the sixth, eighth and ninth innings.
SDSU got on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Jesse Ayala and
Joel Blake drew back-to-back one-out walks and
Tony Martin followed with a single to load the bases. Senior first baseman
Stephen Turner then followed with a single up the middle to score both Ayala and Blake.
Murray State came back to take a 3-2 lead in the home half of the first inning on a three-run home run by Daniel Hill off Jackrabbit starter

The Jackrabbits tied the game at 3-all in the fourth inning as
Erik DeJong scored on a passed ball, but the Thoroughbreds took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Daniel Miller plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Craycraft helped his own cause by driving in an insurance run with a base hit.
Murray State tallied the final run in the fifth inning on a single by Hill that scored Tyler Owen, who doubled with one out.
Thielbar took the loss for the Jackrabbits despite striking out nine in six innings of work. The senior left-hander from Randolph, Minn., allowed eight hits and walked three.
Matt Spinar allowed only one hit as he pitched the final two innings.
Craycraft scattered 10 hits and worked around three walks in earning the victory with a six-inning performance. He struck out five. Daniel Huff earned the save with three scoreless innings, sriking out four and walking two.
All of the Jackrabbits' 12 hits were singles. Leadoff hitter
Billy Stitz went 3-for-5 to lead SDSU, while Martin and Turner each were 2-for-5. Eight of SDSU's nine starters had at least one hit.
Hill and Zach Noonan each had two hits to lead the ?Breds.
SDSU also played errorless defense in its season debut. Murray State committed two errors.
The two teams are scheduled to play the middle game of the three-game series at noon Saturday.
