CONWAY, Ark. ? Central Arkansas built a 5-1 lead and held off a South Dakota State rally for a 5-4 victory and sweep of a three-game college baseball series Sunday afternoon at Bear Stadium.
UCA improved to 5-3 on the season, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 1-5.
After Central Arkansas scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the third inning, SDSU knotted the game in the top of the fourth. Joel Blake singled with one out and later scored on a Tony Martin triple to center field.
The Bears took the lead for good with a three-run outburst in the home half of the fourth. After Jackrabbit starter Layne Somsen walked the bases loaded, designated hitter Will Wagner plated two runs with a base hit to left field. Tye Throneberry then followed with a bunt single to score Jonathan Yerby. Throneberry knocked in the Bears' final run with a sixth-inning single to score Bobby Pritchett, who led off the inning with a double.
SDSU pulled to within a run with three runs of its own in the seventh inning. Zach Briggs and pinch-hitter John Lee opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A throwing error allowed pinch-runner Isaac Johnson to score the first run of the inning and Lee later scored on a wild pitch. Freshman Daniel Marra drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Jesse Ayala, but the Jackrabbits left the tying run in scoring position.
The Jackrabbits got a man on base in the eighth inning, but Pritchett set down the side in order in the ninth inning, notching two strikeouts in the process, to record his second save in as many days for UCA.
Brandon Solberg, the first of five Bear pitchers on the day, pitched six innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. He struck out six, walked two and gave up four hits.
Somsen also worked the first six innings for the Jackrabbits as he dropped to 0-2. The Yankton native walked six and struck out only one batter as he gave up eight hits. Kirby Morsching continued his strong start to the season out of the bullpen by retiring all six batters he faced.
Blake and Martin each had two hits for the Jackrabbits. Hits were even at eight for each team.
SDSU will attempt to get back on the winning track Tuesday at Nebraska. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. at Hawks Field in Lincoln, Neb.
