SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Jesse Sawyer's three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth forced extra innings, and the Jackrabbits scratched the winning run across in the 12th inning Wednesday, lifting South Dakota State to a 7-6 victory over Missouri State and the sweep of a two-game series.
SDSU improved to 3-9 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 4-9.
All three runs in the ninth inning for SDSU were unearned. Beau Hanowski opened the inning by reaching on an error and Billy Stitz followed two batters later with a bunt single. After reliever Pat Doyle coaxed a fly-ball out by Tony Martin, Sawyer stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch three-run blast to left field.
The Jackrabbits used aggressive base-running score the game-winner. With one out in the 12th, Scott Hood walked and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by John Lee. Pinch-runner Layne Somsen, normally a pitcher, then scored the go-ahead run from second base on an infield single by Stephen Turner.
SDSU battled back from an early 5-0 deficit after Missouri State scored three times in the second inning and tacked on two more runs in the third. Zak Swyhart plated the first two runs with a base hit and Brayde Drake doubled in the first run of the third inning.
The Jackrabbits began their comeback with a three-run fourth inning. Hood drove in the first run with a base hit, with the other two runs scoring on an error and RBI groundout by Turner.
Relief pitching was key for the Jackrabbits, who received four strong innings from Sam Pieczynski and five scoreless innings by Caleb Thielbar. The duo allowed only one run and two hits in their combined nine innings of work. Pieczynski struck out two and walked one, while Thielbar notched six strikeouts against two walks as he picked up his first victory of the season.
SDSU starter Isaac Johnson threw the first three innings, allowing five runs and six hits to go along with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Jackrabbits out-hit Missouri State, 15-8, as Sawyer, Hanowski and Eric Cain all tallied three hits each.
SDSU's three-game weekend series at Creighton has been altered. The two teams are now scheduled to play a single game at 2 p.m. Saturday at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha, followed by a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
