OMAHA, Neb. ? Elliot Soto went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs to lead Creighton to an 8-2 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Saturday afternoon.
Creighton improved to 4-11 overall, giving head coach Ed Servais his 200th victory at the school. The Jackrabbits had their two-game winning streak broken and fell to 3-10 on the season.
SDSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter
Beau Hanowski was hit by a pitch, moved to second base on a groundout and score on
Billy Stitz's opposite-field single.
The Bluejays tied the game in the home half of the first as Soto singled and later scored on Vicente Cafaro's double, and grabbed the lead for good with a three-run second inning. Robbie Knight doubled in the first run of the inning and later scored on a base hit by Soto to center field. Soto later advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a passed ball for the final run of the inning.
The Jackrabbits' final run of the game came in the third inning on a solo home run by
Joel Blake. For Blake, it was his first collegiate home run and gave him at least one hit in 11 of the team's 13 games this season.
Creighton tacked on two runs in each of the fifth and eighth innings. A solo home run by Ian Dike and run-scoring single by Soto accounted for the fifth-inning runs. The Bluejays out-hit SDSU, 13-5.
Bluejay starter Greg Hellhake worked the first seven innings to earn the victory. He limited the Jackrabbits to five hits, striking out two and walking five.
Freshman
Layne Somsen took the loss for SDSU, falling to 0-4 on the season. The Yankton native gave up nine hits and five walks, while striking out one in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed six of Creighton's eight runs, five of which were earned.
Sam Pieczynski pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, recording one walk and one strikeout.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, starting at 12:30 p.m.
