MINNEAPOLIS -- Illinois State left-hander Ryan Copeland pitched a complete game, limiting South Dakota State to four hits in leading the Redbirds to a 2-1 victory Saturday at the Metrodome Classic.
Illinois State improved to 3-4, while the Jackrabbits' losing streak reached six as they fell to 1-8.
Both of Illinois State's runs came on sacrifice flies. One off the bat of Evan Kohli in the third inning and the other by Mike Stalowy in the fourth.
The base-running of sophomore Billy Stitz in the third inning accounted for the Jackrabbits' lone run. After being hit by a pitch, Stitz proceeded to steal second, third and home on three consecutive pitches. Stitz tallied his fourth stolen base of the game in the sixth inning.
Copeland struck out eight and walked one as he upped his record to 2-1.
SDSU starter Layne Somsen had the best outing of his freshman season, allowing only three hits in seven innings, while striking out six and walking five. Kirby Morsching pitched the eighth inning.
Joel Blake and Scott Hood each doubled for the Jackrabbits.
The Jackrabbits close out the Metrodome Tournament with a 3 p.m. matchup Sunday against host Minnesota.
