WACO, Texas -- The South Dakota State University women's equestrian Western squad dropped a 6-1 decision to the University of South Carolina in the opening round of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships on Thursday.
The seventh-seeded Gamecocks swept the reining events in advancing to face second-seeded Texas Christian. The only point-producing ride for the 10th-seeded Jackrabbits was turned in by Ashlie Centa as she tallied a 141-132.5 victory over Hailey Thornton in their head-to-head competition. Kaylee Mundwiler tied with her South Carolina counterpart, Emily Brookwalter, with a score of 141.5, but no team points were awarded.
With the Varisty Equestrian season now finished for SDSU, the Jackrabbits will turn their attention to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals April 23-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Ashley Marrin, Melissa Zajac and Molly Ryan will compete in the Hunter Seat divisions during the four-day meet.
