MINNEAPOLIS - For the second time in less than a week, the South Dakota State University baseball team knocked off a major conference opponent, recording a 6-4, 10-inning victory Sunday afternoon over host Minnesota in the finale of the Metrodome Tournament.
John Lee's two-run single with two outs in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the difference for the Jackrabbits, who won in 10 innings for the second consecutive day in improving to 8-4 overall. SDSU ended its nine-game Spring Break trip with a 6-3 mark, including a victory at 14th-ranked Arkansas on March 9.
Minnesota dropped to 5-9 on the season.
Joel Blake opened the scoring for the Jackrabbits with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Billy Stitz led off the frame with a base hit and Daniel Telford later reached on an error before Blake homered to left field for his first round-tripper of the season.
Minnesota's A.J. Pettersen scored the Golden Gophers' first run of the game in the home half of the first and knocked in a run with a double in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2.
SDSU strung together three consecutive two-out singles to go up 4-2 in the sixth. Zach Rhodes singled to center, Lee notched a hit to left field and Zach Briggs singled to right center to score Rhodes.
The Golden Gophers tied the game with single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Kyle Knudson started the eighth-inning rally with a leadoff double against SDSU reliever Alex Oberle and came home with the tying run on a base hit by Puhl.
Blake started SDSU's game-winning rally in the 10th with a leadoff walk. Pinch-runner Jeff Fish then stole second base. On ball four to Jesse Sawyer, Fish moved up to third base on a wild pitch. Sawyer later stole second to put runners at second and third with one out, but Scott Fern induced Rhodes to pop out to third base. Lee then greeted reliever Austin Lubinsky with a base hit to right field to score both Fish and Sawyer.
Trever Vermeulen allowed a one-out walk, but got Puhl to ground into a double play to end the game for his second save of the season.
Sam Pieczynski worked the first 5 2/3 innings for the Jackrabbits, allowing three runs while scattering 11 hits. Oberle gave up four hits and a run in 3 1/3 innings to earn his second win of the season.
Blake, Lee and Briggs each tallied two of the Jackrabbits' 10 hits. Pettersen and Knudson led Minnesota's 15-hit attack with three hits apiece.
SDSU is scheduled to face another major conference opponent on Tuesday, traveling to Nebraska. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. at Hawks Field in Lincoln, Neb.
