IOWA CITY, Iowa - South Dakota State received several clutch hits, including the go-ahead home run from Zach Briggs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, as the Jackrabbits downed Iowa, 12-10, Tuesday night at Duane Banks Field.
SDSU improved to 11-6 overall, including 2-0 against Big Ten Conference opponents this season, The Hawkeyes dropped to 8-13 overall.
Seven of the Jackrabbits' runs scored on two-out hits, starting with all four runs in the second inning. After Iowa grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Ryan Durant, SDSU's Billy Stitz tied the game with a two-out, two-run double to right center that scored John Lee and Zach Rhodes. Eric Cain then followed with an infield single that plated both Briggs and Stitz.
SDSU added a run in the third inning on a two-out run-scoring single by Beau Hanowski, then built the lead to 7-2 on a two-run double by Jesse Sawyer in the fourth inning.
Iowa regained the lead at 8-7 with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Kurt Lee doubled in two runs in the fourth inning to chase Jackrabbit starter Mike Robinson, and the Hawkeyes scored three runs on three hits against reliever Alex Oberle during the next frame.
The Jackrabbits tied the game at 8-all in the sixth inning as Lee doubled with one out, moved to third on a base hit by Briggs and scored on a groundout by Rhodes.
Jeff Fish gave SDSU a momentary 9-8 lead with a pinch-hit solo home run to lead off the seventh inning. However, the Hawkeyes came right back to knot the game on an RBI double by Phil Keppler.
Iowa reliever Nick Brown retired the first two Jackrabbit hitters in the top of the eighth, but Briggs drove a pitch over the wall in left field for his second home run of the season to give SDSU a 10-9 lead.
The Jackrabbits added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Beau Hanowski led off the inning with a double and scored one out later on a base hit by Stitz. After moving up a base on a groundout, Joel Blake delivered another two-out single to plate Stitz with an insurance run.
The Hawkeyes took advantage of a leadoff walk to pull within 12-10 in the bottom of the ninth, but SDSU reliever Trever Vermeulen minimized the damage as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Vermeulen pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and recorded the only strikeout by a Jackrabbit pitcher on the evening.
Hits were even at 16 as Stitz, Lee and Briggs each tallied three for the Jackrabbits. Stitz and Lee also scored three runs apiece. Keppler, Mike McQuillan and Chett Zeise each posted three hits for the Hawkeyes.
The two-game series concludes Wednesday with a 4 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
