IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa took advantage of two South Dakota State errors in the eighth inning, rallying for three runs in a 6-5 victory Wednesday afternoon to salvage a split of a two-game baseball series.
The Hawkeyes upped their record to 9-13 overall, while SDSU dropped to 11-7 on the season.
Mike McQuillan started the game-winning rally for the Hawkeyes with a single up the middle and Ryan Durant followed by being hit by a pitch. After an unsuccessful bunt attempt led to an out, Durant came around to score on an errant throw to second base by Jackrabbit reliever Trever Vermeulen on a potential inning-ending double play attempt. SDSU again couldn't turn the double play as another throwing error after a force play at second allowed the tying run to score. After an intentional walk, Kurt Lee notched an infield single to plate pinch-runner Sean Flanagan with the eventual winning run.
The Iowa rally in the bottom of the eighth came after the Jackrabbits put together a four-run frame in the top of the inning. Eric Cain and Joel Blake started the frame with back-to-back walks. Jesse Sawyer, Zach Rhodes, Beau Hanowski and Daniel Telford all delivered run-scoring singles in the inning.
SDSU took a 1-0 in the first inning without getting the ball out of the infield. Billy Stitz reached on an error to lead off the inning. After the next two SDSU hitters were retired, the inning was extended when Sawyer reached on a throwing error after the third strike was not handled cleanly. John Lee then collected an infield single to score Stitz.
Jackrabbit starter Blake Treinen kept Iowa off the board until the fourth inning, when Mike Corbeil knocked in McQuillan with a single up the middle. The Hawkeyes took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, when Kurt Lee scored on a wild pitch and McQuillan delivered a sacrifice fly.
Treinen struck out six while allowing six hits and one walk in seven innings. Vermeulen suffered his first loss of the season in five decisions.
Hawkeye starter Zach Robertson also put up impressive numbers in seven innings on the mound. The southpaw fanned 10 to go along with four hits and two walks. Michael Jacobs was credited with the win in relief, with Kevin Lee pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his fourth save of the season.
Each team tallied eight hits. Hanowski was 2-for-2, with Sawyer adding a pair of hits in five trips to the plate. McQuillan and Kurt Lee each notched two hits for Iowa.
SDSU's four errors in the game tied a season high.
SDSU continues its road trip by opening a three-game series Friday night at Dallas Baptist (Texas). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
