AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Air Force rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 12-11 victory over South Dakota State in the opening game of a four-game non-conference baseball series Friday afternoon.
Air Force upped its record to 3-6 overall, while SDSU evened its mark at 2-2. The two squads are slated to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. Mountain Time (noon Central).
The Jackrabbits put crooked numbers on the board in three of the first four innings, building an 8-3 advantage through three and a half innings. SDSU scored twice in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Jesse Sawyer that scored Billy Stitz and John Lee.
Air Force plated a run in the home half of the first inning and took a momentary lead with a pair of runs in the second. However, the Jackrabbits regained the lead in the third inning on a two-run home run by Sawyer, his first of the season.
SDSU tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth. Lee drove in the first run of the frame with a base hit to score Zach Briggs and Joel Blake followed with a double to center field to score Stitz. After a walk to Sawyer loaded the bases, newcomer Zach Rhodes delivered a two-run single.
The Falcons scored single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to get back to 9-6, but SDSU made the score 10-6 in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Stitz.
Air Force then sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth inning against Jackrabbit reliever Sam Pieczynski. Matt Alexander knocked in the first two runs with a double to right field and Ben Ausbun gave the Falcons an 11-10 lead with a three-run homer to right. The next batter, Travis Lane, delivered a valuable insurance run with a solo home. Ausbun, Lane and Ethan Loosen each tallied three hits to lead the Falcons' 19-hit attack.
The Jackrabbits got a run back in the top of the ninth on a pinch-hit solo home run by redshirt freshman Daniel Telford, but reliever Matt Zettler retired the next SDSU hitter to earn the save.
Stitz, Blake, Sawyer and Rhodes each notched three of the Jackrabbits' season-high 18 hits.
SDSU starter Mike Robinson struck out five and walked one, while allowing six runs in six innings. Trever Vermeulen struck out the side in pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Kincaid Koehler was credited with the victory after allowing only one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
