FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The South Dakota State University baseball continued its offensive onslaught, scoring a combined 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep of IPFW Saturday afternoon in Summit League action.
The Jackrabbits posted a 17-5 victory in the opener, scoring 12 times in the fifth inning, then recorded a 10-8 come-from-behind victory in Game 2 behind a two-run, pinch-hit home run by Zach Briggs that gave SDSU the lead.
SDSU improved to 16-9 overall and 3-0 in Summit League play. IPFW dropped to 4-24 overall, 0-3 in the league. The two teams are scheduled to conclude their four-game series Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. Eastern Time first pitch.
In the opener, IPFW drew first blood on a three-run home run by Brendan Landwehr in the bottom of the second inning.
The score remained 3-0 until the top of the fifth, when the Jackrabbits sent 17 batters to the plate en route to a season-high 12-run inning. Eric Cain hit a three-run home run - his eighth of the season - and Beau Hanowski, Joel Blake, Billy Stitz and John Lee each delivered two-run hits. Hanowski's hit was a double as he extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games.
Jackrabbit starter Stephen Bougher held the Mastodons in check for the remainder of his seven-inning stint. A freshman from Papillion, Neb., Bougher allowed only four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five in earning his first collegiate victory.
SDSU tacked on five runs in the top of the ninth. The first run scored on an error, with Andrew Melton adding a two-run double and Daniel Telford delivering a two-run pinch-hit single.
Blake finished the game 4-for-6 to lead the Jackrabbits' 15-hit attack.
In Game 2, the Jackrabbit bullpen pitched six shutout innings as SDSU overcame another early deficit.
After SDSU scored three times in the top of the first on a two-run single by John Lee and RBI single by Zach Rhodes, the Mastodons came back with six runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Shaun VanDriessche hit a three-run home run and Landwehr slammed a two-run homer off Jackrabbit starter Mike Robinson.
The Jackrabbits posted another three-spot in the top of the second to tie the game, with all three runs scoring on a three-run homer by Lee.
IPFW regained the lead on a two-run single by Cody Miller in the bottom of the second before the Jackrabbit bullpen took over. Alex Oberle pitched four scoreless innings and was credited with the win after the Jackrabbits rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth.
Lee scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch and Zach Rhodes followed with a run-scoring single. Briggs then stepped to the plate and drove a Matt Antos pitch over the fence in left-center field for his fourth home run of the season.
Trever Vermeulen pitched the final two innings for SDSU to pick up his fifth save of the season.
