FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- South Dakota State scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to record a 7-3 victory and four-game sweep over IPFW in Summit League baseball action Sunday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits, who posted their fifth consecutive win overall, improved to 17-9 overall and 4-0 in league play. IPFW dropped to 4-25 overall, 0-4 in The Summit League.
SDSU scored three times in the third inning, with Billy Stitz plating the first two runs with a base hit. After Stitz stole second base, Joel Blake followed with a run-scoring single to right.
The Mastodons tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Shaun VanDriessche and a run-scoring single by Cory Miller in the fifth.
Beau Hanowski started the Jackrabbit rally in the eighth with a leadoff single to left field. He advanced to second on an error and scored on John Lee's single up the middle. Eric Cain followed with an RBI single of his own and pinch-hitter Zach Rhodes gave SDSU more breathing room with a two-run single that scored Lee and Cain.
Trever Vermeulen allowed two hits over the final two innings to secure the Jackrabbit victory. Shane Kraemer struck out four, walked two and scattered eight hits in pitching the first six innings. Alex Oberle recorded a win for the second consecutive day after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson took the loss despite striking out five in 7 1/3 innings.
Lee was 3-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' 12-10 advantage in hits.
SDSU returns to action Wednesday at Minnesota. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
