MINNEAPOLIS. - Eric Cain went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and the South Dakota State bullpen pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings as the Jackrabbits notched a 5-3 victory over Minnesota Wednesday night at Mall of America Field.
In defeating the Golden Gophers for the second time this season, SDSU improved to 18-9 overall and extended its winning streak to a season-best six games. Minnesota dropped to 13-20 overall. The two teams are slated to close out their three-game season series next Tuesday (April 20) at Erv Huether Field on the SDSU campus. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
The Jackrabbits never trailed in Wednesday's game, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Billy Stitz led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Hanowski and scored on a double by Jesse Sawyer. After a walk to John Lee, Cain singled through the left side
Minnesota got a run back in the home half of the first on an RBI double by Kyle Knudson that scored A.J. Pettersen.
SDSU extended the lead to 5-1 with a two-run single by Cain in the third inning and an RBI groundout by Daniel Telford in the fifth.
The Golden Gophers pulled to within 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Pettersen delivered a sacrifice fly against Jackrabbit starter Jared Koch and Michael Kvasnicka greeted reliever Alex Oberle with an RBI double. Minnesota eventually loaded the bases before Oberle induced a fly ball to end the inning.
Oberle, who was credited with his team-leading fifth victory of the season, also kept Minnesota off the board in the sixth and seventh innings. Mike Robinson recorded the first two outs of the eighth inning before Trever Vermeulen entered and retired all four batters he faced to record his sixth save of the season. The junior right-hander from Mitchell needed only four pitches to retire the side in the ninth inning.
Koch, who missed the entire 2009 season due to injury, put together his most impressive outing of the season. The senior from Cherokee, Iowa, struck out four and walked two in 4 1/3 innings.
Minnesota held a 10-9 advantage in hits, with Troy Larson leading the charge with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Stitz and Hanowski each added two hits for the Jackrabbits.
SDSU resumes Summit League play Friday at Oakland University. Start time is 3 p.m. Eastern Time in Rochester, Mich.
