ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sam Pieczynski allowed only two hits over seven innings and Eric Cain hit a pair of home runs to lead the South Dakota State University baseball team to a 13-2 victory over Oakland University Friday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits remained unbeaten in Summit League play, improving to 19-9 overall and 5-0 in the league with their seventh consecutive win. Oakland dropped to 5-21 overall and 0-5 in The Summit League.
Oakland scored both of its runs in the first inning. John Estes walked with one out and Aaron Cieslak followed an out later with a two-run home run.
Cain tied the game with a two-run home run in the second inning and added a three-run shot - his team-leading 10th home run of the season - in the third inning. John Lee opened the scoring in the six-run third inning with a two-run double, while Billy Stitz plated the final run of the inning his a double.
Pieczynski retired eight hitters in a row between the first and fourth inning and allowed only a leadoff single by Mike Carson in the fifth inning en route to his fourth victory of the season. The senior right-hander established a new career high for strikeouts for the second start in a row with seven, while walking three.
The Jackrabbits tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh inning and took advantage of two Oakland errors in the eighth inning to build a 13-2 lead.
Austin Busse pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning for SDSU to end the game by the 10-run rule.
All but one Jackrabbit starter recorded at least two hits as SDSU finished the game with 20 hits. Cain, Lee and Stitz all notched three hits.
The two teams are slated to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon Eastern Time.
NOTES: SDSU leads the all-time series 6-0 ... the Jackrabbits have won 19 of their last 21 Summit League regular season games dating back to the 2009 season ... Cain, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, recorded his fourth game this season with five or more runs batted in and second multi-home run game ... Cain finished the day batting .403 for the season, but still trails Lee (.429) for the team lead ... the Jackrabbits did not commit an error for the 10th time this season ... SDSU reached double figures in runs for the 12th time this season and reached the 20-hit plateau for fifth time in 2010
