ROCHESTER, Mich. - The South Dakota State University baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 13-3 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, but Oakland University claimed a 3-1 victory in Game 2 behind a strong pitching performance by Kyle Teague.
The Jackrabbits moved to 20-10 on the season, including 6-1 in Summit League play. Oakland finished the day 6-22 overall, 1-6 in The Summit League.
After Oakland scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning in the opener, the Jackrabbits erupted for eight runs in the top of the second. SDSU rapped out seven hits in the frame, including a two-run single by Jesse Sawyer and a two-run home run by Joel Blake.
SDSU added three runs in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Beau Hanowski and two-run single by Billy Stitz. A junior center fielder, Stitz ended the game 3-for-5 with four runs batted in after being moved into the third spot in the batting order to lead the Jackrabbits' 14-hit attack.
The Golden Grizzlies pulled to within 11-3 with single runs in the third and fifth innings, but SDSU ended the game by the 10-run rule with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Zach Briggs plated John Lee with a double in the sixth, and Stitz tripled in the seventh-inning run.
Jackrabbit starter Blake Treinen improved to 3-0 on the season after pitching the first six innings. The junior right-hander struck out five, walked two and allowed six hits.
In the nitecap, Teague struck out eight and limited SDSU to a season-low three hits as Oakland won its first league game of the season.
The Grizzlies gave Teague all the run support he would need with a three-run first inning. Aaron Cieslak tripled in the first two runs and Nolan Jacoby followed with an RBI double.
SDSU's lone run of the game came in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Blake - his second round-tripper of the afternoon and sixth of the season.
Freshman right-hander Stephen Bougher took the loss for the Jackrabbits. He threw the first four innings, allowing five hits and one walk to go along with one strikeout. Only one of the runs Bougher allowed was earned.
SDSU and Oakland are scheduled to play the series finale at 1 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday.
