FARGO, N.D. - Zach Wentz pitched a complete game and North Dakota State pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bison salvaged the final game of a four-game Summit League baseball series, downing South Dakota State, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
NDSU, which kept its hopes alive for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Summit League postseason tournament, improved to 21-27 overall and 10-13 in league play. The Jackrabbits, who won the first three games of the series, fell to 33-17 overall and 16-8 in The Summit League.
The Bison took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Nic Obey off SDSU starter Alex Oberle.
SDSU took a momentary 4-2 lead with a four-run fifth inning. Jesse Sawyer knocked in the first run of the inning with a base hit that scored Billy Stitz. Eric Cain, who was 4-for-5 on the day, then delivered a two-run single. After a walk, Zach Rhodes delivered a base hit to plate Cain.
NDSU tied the game in the fifth inning as Kenny Beese tripled in one run and scored on Max Casper's base hit.
Zach Heidmann led off the Bison sixth inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Riewer and scored what would be the winning run on a groundout by Tyler Steen.
Wentz, who walked five and struck out four in his complete-game effort, worked around a pair of Bison errors in the eighth inning to keep NDSU in the lead. He retired the Jackrabbits in order in the ninth inning to seal his fifth victory of the season.
Hits were even at 10 for each team. Obey, Steen and Heidmann each had two hits for the Bison, while Stitz and John Lee tallied two hits apiece for SDSU.
Oberle, who was making only his third start of the season, took the loss as he surrendered eight hits and one walk, while striking out three. Trever Vermeulen pitched two shutout innings to close out the game on the mound for the Jackrabbits.
SDSU is scheduled to make a return trip to North Dakota, traveling Tuesday to Grand Forks for a doubleheader against the University of North Dakota. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The Jackrabbits return to home action Friday, opening their final Summit League series of the regular season with a doubleheader against Western Illinois.
