Oral Roberts grabbed the lead with an eight-run third inning and cruised to a 15-5, seven-inning victory over South Dakota State in the finale of a four-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 27-21 overall and 14-6 in league play. SDSU, which won the first three games of the series, dropped to 30-16 overall and 13-7 in The Summit League.
The day started out well for the Jackrabbits, who put together a pair of two-out rallies to build a 4-0 lead after two innings. In the bottom of the first, Joel Blake doubled with two outs and scored on Jesse Sawyer's single to center field. John Lee then followed with a triple to the right-field corner to bring home Sawyer. Lee made it 3-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.
Billy Stitz started a two-out rally in the second with an opposite-field double. Blake then delivered a single to right field to score Stitz, who slid under and around the tag on a close play at the plate.
ORU got to Jackrabbit starter Shane Kraemer the second time through the order, sending 12 batters to the plate in the eight-run third inning. After Tyler Garewal walked to lead off the inning, the next five batters notched hits to chase Kraemer from the game. P.J. Sequeira doubled in two runs as the last batter to face Kraemer, and Colby Price and Robert Barbosa greeted reliever Alex Oberle with back-to-back doubles to drive in two more runs.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead on solo home runs by Nick Baligod and Price in the fourth inning.
Oberle kept ORU in check until the top of the seventh, when Chris Elder doubled in two runs. Joey Winiecki singled up the middle against Austin Busse to plate Elder and Tyler Saladino secured the victory with a two-run homer to left field.
ORU held an 18-10 advantage in hits as four different players tallied three hits apiece, including Price, who stroked two doubles and a home run on the day. Blake, Sawyer, Lee and Eric Cain each posted two hits for the Jackrabbits.
Bryce Smolen worked the final four innings to earn the victory in relief for Oral Roberts. He allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out one. Starter Dallas Beeler gave up four earned runs on seven hits, walked three and fanned two.
Kraemer dropped to 3-3 on the season as he gave up six earned runs and eight hits.
