Reserve center Katie Lingle posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and three other Jackrabbits scored in double figures as South Dakota State defeated IPFW, 81-58, in Summit League women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits improved to 4-0 in league play for the first time and upped their overall record to 9-6. IPFW dropped its sixth consecutive game, falling to 4-10 overall and 2-2 in league play.
SDSU broke out to a 16-4 lead as four different players connected on three-pointers in the first five minutes of the contest. The Mastodons inched back to within six points midway through the half, but the Jackrabbits' Hannah Strop and Jill Young hit back-to-back three-pointers as part of a 14-3 run to put SDSU up 37-20 with 6 minutes, 13 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Jackrabbits led 46-30 at intermission on the strength of 7-of-16 shooting from long distance.
In the second half, the Jackrabbits extended the lead to 18 points, 52-34, on a Lingle putback four minutes into the second stanza before IPFW put together one last run. Mastodon sharpshooter Anne Boese nailed a pair of three-pointers and added another basket to trim the margin to nine points, 60-51, with 8:24 to play.
Young and the Jackrabbits quickly slammed the door shut. The Mitchell native added to her SDSU career three-point record with a flurry of four treys over the next five-plus minutes in what resembled a personal game of around the world — one from the top of the key, two from the right side and one from the left wing — to lead the decisive 18-2 run.
Young ended the afternoon with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range. Jennie Sunnarborg tallied 16 points, while Ashley Eide narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Overall, SDSU held a 50-35 advantage on the boards, including 18 on the offensive glass.
