ARLINGTON, Texas - Jared Stafford struck out eight batters in a complete-game effort, lifting Dallas Baptist to a 5-2 victory over South Dakota State in baseball action Saturday at the UTA Inviational.
DBU improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 0-2. SDSU closes out tournament play at 11 a.m. Sunday against Missouri State.
The Patriots took a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the third and fourth innings against SDSU starter Stephen Bougher. DBU took advantage of a Jackrabbit error to score the first run, with the second run scoring on a groundout.
SDSU, which was held hitless through the first five innings, came back to tie the game with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Beau Hanowski led off the sixth inning with a base hit and later scored on a groundout by Zach Rhodes. Daniel Telford's solo home run with two outs in the seventh knotted the game at 2-all.
DBU regained the lead in the home half of the seventh as Austin Elkins led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duncan McAlpine.
The Jackrabbits missed out on a golden opportunity to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Billy Stitz led off with a base hit and moved to third on a base hit by Rhodes to put runners at the corners with no outs. However, Stafford retired the 3-4-5 batters in the Jackrabbit lineup in order, striking out Joel Blake and Jesse Sawyer before inducing a groundout by Eric Cain.
The Patriots tacked on a pair of runs in their half of the eighth on a two-run single by Elkins to put the game out of reach.
Bougher gave SDSU its second complete-game pitching effort in as many days, limiting Dallas Baptist to five hits. The sophomore right-hander walked three and struck out three.
Hanowski was 3-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' eight-hit attack. Stitz added a pair of hits.
