ARLINGTON, Texas - Blake Barber and Dan Kickham combined on a six-hit shutout Sunday as Missouri State recorded a 2-0 victory over South Dakota State in the finale for both teams at the UTA Invitational.
The Bears improved to 4-3 on the season, while SDSU remained winless at 0-3.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when Brent Seifert led off with a triple to right center against Jackrabbit starter Blake Treinen and came around to score on a base hit by Derek Mattea. Seifert led the Bears with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
Missouri State added an unearned run in the top of the ninth against SDSU reliever Trever Vermeulen. The Bears strung together back-to-back singles by Brett Marshall and Aaron Conway and a walk to Spiker Helms before a Jackrabbit error allowed a run to score.
SDSU's only scoring opportunity of the game came in the eighth inning, when Beau Hanowski and Andrew Phelan notched back-to-back two-out singles.
Barber, who evened his record at 1-1, allowed five hits over 8 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking none. Kickham recorded the final two outs for his first save.
For SDSU, Treinen pitched the first seven innings, striking out three and walking two while surrendering six hits. Vermeuelen also fanned three and walked a pair in his two innings of work.
Joel Blake and Phelan each recorded two of the Jackrabbits' six hits. Billy Stitz notched a third-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to last season.
The Jackrabbits return to action with a four-game series March 4-6 at Tennessee-Martin.
