OMAHA, Neb. - Nick Judkins' two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 3-all tie and sent Creighton to a 6-3 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Saturday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
The Bluejays improved to 11-3 in winning the first two games of the three-game series. SDSU dropped to 3-7 overall.
The Jackrabbits opened the scoring as the second batter of the game, Zach Rhodes, connected on a solo home run to right-center field. For Rhodes, it was his first round-tripper of the season.
Creighton tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Trever Adams led off the frame with a triple against Jackrabbit ace Blake Treinen and later scored on a base hit by Chance Ross.
The game remained deadlocked until the Jackrabbits pushed a run across in the top of the seventh. With one out, Beau Hanowski walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Daniel Marra's opposite-field single to right.
However, the Bluejays gained the lead in the home half of the seventh. Judkins bunted for a base hit and moved around to third base on an errant throw. Judkins scored on a groundout before Adams hit a solo home run to right field.
SDSU knotted the game at three in the top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Phil Paquette reached on an infield single, moved to second on a walk and later to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Cain. Paquette later scored on an error.
The Bluejays put together their game-winning rally against SDSU closer Trever Vermeulen. Erik Mattingly was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Ross walked. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt and the Jackrabbits issued an intentional walk to Anthony Bemboom to load the bases. Judkins then followed with a base hit through the right side to plate pinch runner Brad McKewon and Ross. The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Treinen allowed one run in six innings for SDSU, allowing seven hits and three bases on balls with a pair of strikeouts. Bluejay starter Jonas Dufek struck out four and walked two in allowing two runs on six hits. Reese McGraw recorded the final five outs to earn the victory in relief for Creighton.
The two teams will close out their three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
