OMAHA, Neb. -- Alex Staehely went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in to lead Creighton to a 13-0 victory over South Dakota State Sunday afternoon and a three-game sweep of a college baseball series at the CU Sports Complex.
The Bluejays improved to 12-3 overall, while SDSU dropped to 3-8 on the season.
Staehely and Creighton set the tone early as the second baseman doubled down the left-field line to score the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. The Bluejays tacked on three more in the second inning, starting with an RBI bunt single by Joey Bowens. The other two runs scored on a groundout and wild pitch.
The Bluejays put the game out of reach with three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Staehely drove in the first run of the fifth with an RBI single and later scored on a base hit by Chance Ross. Staehley accounted for both runs in the sixth with another two-run double to left field.
Seven Creighton pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout. Greg Hellhake, who worked two perfect innings to open the game, was credited with the victory. Bluejay pitchers struck out seven and walked only one.
Stephen Bougher, from nearby Papillion, Neb., took the loss for SDSU. The sophomore right-hander allowed 11 hits and eight runs - five earned - in five innings, while striking out two and walking none.
Ross and Jimmy Swift also posted three hits as part of the Bluejays' 16-hit attack. Swift and Trever Adams each scored four runs.
