CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay broke a tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to go on to defeat South Dakota State, 10-7, in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon.
The Governors improved to 7-3, while SDSU dropped to 2-5 on the season. The two teams are scheduled to conclude their two-game series Wednesday.
APSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Jackrabbit starter Shane Kraemer in the first inning and added two more in the bottom of the third on back-to-back home runs by John Hogan and Cody Hudson.
The Jackrabbits began to chip away at the deficit, cracking the scoring column on a solo home run by Erik DeJong with one out in the fourth inning. SDSU pulled to within 6-3 with a run-scoring double by DeJong in the sixth and an RBI single by Eric Cain in the seventh.
SDSU knotted the game at 6-all in the eighth inning by taking advantage of a Governor error. DeJong opened the frame with a double. Beau Hanowski and Phil Paquette later walked to load the bases. Joel Blake then hit a ground ball to shortstop, but the throw to retire Paquette at second base was errant and allowed all three runs to score.
APSU put together its game-winning rally against Jackrabbit star closer Trever Vermeulen, who retired the first batter he faced before the next six batters reached safely. Hudson's two-run single chased Vermeulen from the game.
DeJong singled in the final Jackrabbit of the game in the top of the ninth to finish 4-for-5 with three runs batted in. Hogan was 3-for-5 to lead the Governors, who held a 14-9 advantage in hits.
Jeremy Dobbs was credited with the win in relief for APSU, after striking out five in two innings. Starter Alex Belew fanned seven Jackrabbit hitters in six innings of work.
