Recent South Dakota State graduate and men's basketball standout Clint Sargent signed a contract to play professionally in Germany this week when he came to terms with USC Heidelberg in the German Pro 'A' League.
"I'm really excited, really looking forward to leaving and getting over there and meeting my teammates and coaches, and getting used to my new environment." Sargent said on Tuesday.
Sargent becomes the second Jackrabbit in as many years to sign with a pro team overseas, joining Kai Williams, who signed with ADA Blois Basketball in France last year.
"I was so pleased to hear that Clint signed a contract to play in Germany. Not only will it be a great experience for him, but it's good for our program," SDSU Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Nagy said in an email from Zimbabwe, Africa, where he put on a clinic today in conjunction with Samaritan's Feet. "We're clearly growing as a program, and the fact that we have players signing pro contracts is evidence of that fact."
Sargent becomes the second Jackrabbit to sign with USC Heidelberg, following in the footsteps of 2008 SDSU graduate Ben Beran, who signed with the team in 2009 and gave Sargent a heads-up on what to expect in Germany.
"He enjoyed it, he said that it got lonely at times," Sargent said. "But as far as the team goes, he really enjoyed the organization, everybody treated him well and he liked the basketball."
A South Sioux City, Neb., native, Sargent finished his career with an SDSU record 252 career three-pointers and an SDSU record 659 three-point field goal attempts. He also finished fifth all-time at SDSU with 1,505 career points, which makes him the most prolific scorer at the Division I level.
Sargent leaves for Germany on Aug. 13.
