MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State scored runs in bunches in the middle innings, recording a 12-4 victory and a three-game series sweep of South Dakota State in college baseball action Sunday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds improved to 5-3 on the season, while SDSU remained winless at 0-3.
Murray State never trailed in the game, scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Ty Stetson drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double to the left-center gap by Travis Isaak. The double by Isaak was the only hit allowed by Jackrabbit starter Layne Somsen, who was making his first appearance since suffering an arm injury early in the 2010 season. The Yankton native struck out three and walked four in two innings of work.
The 'Breds roughed up Jackrabbit reliever Kolton Emery for seven runs, scoring three times in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. Stetson tripled in the final two runs of the fourth inning, while Cody Larson delivered a run-scoring single for the second inning in a row to start the fifth-inning barrage.
Murray State tacked on four more runs in a sixth inning that featured four singles, a walk and two hit batters. Six different Jackrabbit pitchers combined to issue nine free passes in the game.
SDSU finally broke into the scoring column with a four-run eighth inning. Eric Cain delivered the first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly, followed by a three-run pinch-hit home run by junior Nick Andrews. The round-tripper was the first of Andrews' collegiate career.
MSU starter Tim Vonder Haar was credited with his first victory of the season after pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits, walked four and struck out five.
Stetson was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the 'Breds' 15-hit attack. Daniel Marra recorded two the Jackrabbits' nine hits.
The Jackrabbits will attempt to get on the winning track Friday (March 2), when they open a three-game series at Arkansas State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark.
