JONESBORO, Ark. - The South Dakota State University baseball team dropped to 0-4 on the season with a 15-5 loss at Arkansas State Friday evening.
All of the Jackrabbits' scoring came in the first two innings, plating three runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the second. Zach Briggs double in the first two Jackrabbit runs and later scored on a base hit by Eric Cain. In the second inning, Daniel Telford led off with a double and came around to score on a home run by Andrew Melton.
Arkansas State tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the first inning, scoring the first run on a run-scoring groundout, followed by a two-run home run by Ryan Emery.
The Red Wolves took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, roughing up SDSU starter Stephen Bougher for four runs. Emery drove in the first two runs with a single and Claude Johnson plated the final two runs with a base hit.
Johnson added a two-run single in the sixth inning, finishing the game 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Arkansas State's Cory Kyle pitched five innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory for Arkansas State, which improved to 5-4 overall. The right-hander struck out six and walked one in earning his second win of the season.
Telford was 2-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' nine-hit attack.
The two teams are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
