JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to prevail, 12-7, over South Dakota State in college baseball action Saturday afternoon.
In taking the first two games of the three-game series, the Red Wolves improved to 6-4 overall. SDSU remained winless at 0-5.
After Arkansas State scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Jackrabbits took a 2-1 lead on a two-run double by Nick Andrew that scored both Zach Briggs and Daniel Telford. Briggs homered to lead off the fourth inning to give SDSU a 3-1 lead.
ASU countered with a solo home run by Ryan Emery in the home half of the fourth and regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning that was aided by a Jackrabbit error.
SDSU struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 7-6 lead. Daniel Marra started the rally with a base hit and scored on a groundout. Later in the inning, Zach Rhodes delivered a bases-clearing, three-run triple that scored Andrew Phelan, Beau Hanowski and Phil Paquette.
The Red Wolves took advantage of one of six SDSU errors on the day during its decisive six-run eighth inning. The inning also included a hit batter, passed ball, two walks and three hits before Michael Faulkner put the game out of reach with a two-run single.
Briggs recorded two of SDSU's seven hits. Faulkner and Zach George each notched two of ASU's 10 hits.
Layne Somsen started for the Jackrabbits, allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked three in a no-decision effort. Shane Kraemer took the loss in relief.
Brandon Farley retired all four hitters he faced to earn the victory in relief.
The two teams complete their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
