The South Dakota State equestrian team finished with a 6-3 edge in western and won the MOP in both western events, but came up short on the hunt seat side in an 11-8 loss to No. 10 New Mexico State on Friday a the DeHaan Equestrian Center.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 2-4 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 3-2.
“We did not ride today like we practiced this week,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “We lacked focus and left the door open on many of our rides for New Mexico State to take the point, and they capitalized on those opportunities.”
SDSU scored four of the five points in horsemanship, with Elizabeth Niewojna leading the way with a 74.5, which ties a season-high score and earned her MOP honors. The sophomore's first win of the season gives her a 1-4 record and her third-career MOP award moves her into a tie for second all-time at SDSU.
Lexus Hoffman also picked up her first win of the season in horsemanship against three losses, while Kelsey Swainston improves to 3-2 and Danielle Dickerson to 2-2 with their wins.
Freshman Miranda Sullivan posted her first collegiate win and MOP with a 72.5 in reining to improve to 1-2-1 on the season, while fellow freshman Mariah Wright remains undefeated at 4-0-1 with a score of 70.5.
Senior Jordan Goodall and junior Marielle Golden scored the Jacks lone hunt seat points in the day, both on the flat. Goodall's score of 78 givers her a 2-3 record, while Golden's record on the flat remains unblemished at 4-0 with her score of 73.
The Jacks get right back to action on Saturday, when they square off against the No. 6 SMU Mustangs at 8 a.m.
