BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — South Dakota State earned a split in reining, but second-ranked South Carolina held the upper hand in the other three events to record a 15-4 victory over the Jackrabbits in a nonconference head-to-head equestrian competition Friday at One Wood Farm.
SDSU dropped to 4-7 overall. The Jackrabbits also competed in two events against Delaware State on Friday and finished the day tied at 4-all. The two squads will conclude their competition at 10 a.m. Eastern (9 a.m. Central) on Saturday with fences and reining to be contested.
Against South Carolina, Emma Riggs and Maryn Mead were victorious in reining for the Jackrabbits. Riggs scored 71.5 points to win her matchup against Mattie McNeill, while Mead earned a 67.5-66.5 victory over Gracie Mae Stingle. Hailey Hanson and USC's Emily Patton tied at 71.5.
The Gamecocks dominated the jumping seat events, sweeping the five points up for grabs in fences and earning four of the five points in flat. Kayla Scherer picked up the lone point in those two events for 10th-ranked SDSU by notching a 55-52 victory over Mary Hunter Millet.
Avery Bergan was the lone victory for the Jackrabbits in horsemanship, edging Lillian Laney by a half-point, 70.5-70, on Sparky.
