The fourth seeded South Dakota State equestrian team came from behind to secure a close win over top seed Fresno State on Friday in the first round of the NCEA Independent Championship at the DeHaan Equestrian Center in Brookings.
The teams tied at 8-8 in points, but the Jackrabbits prevailed on western equivalency scores by the slim margin of 2,056.6-2,042 to improve to 2-9 on the season. Fresno State falls to 4-5, and rides against No. 3 seed Delaware State on Saturday, while the Jackrabbits take on No. 2 seed UT-Martin for the Independent Championship title.
Trailing 7-5 after three events, the Jacks needed at least three points, and some high scores, in reining to give themselves a chance to win, and did just that, getting points from 2013 NCEA All-American Laura Dunlavy, 2014 All-American Raivenne Scott and from junior Danielle Baker to tie the meet at 8-8 and send it to a tiebreaker, which came out in the Jacks favor.
Scott improves to 9-0-1 on the season with the win, while Dunlavy boosts her record to 4-5-1 and Baker to 4-5.
Lexus Hoffman picked up her second straight win in horsemanship to improve to 2-1 on the season, with Victoria Johnson boosting her record to 6-4 with a horsemanship win.
Santana Wright scored two of the Jacks three points in hunt seat, moving to 6-5 over fences and to 4-5 this season on the flat.
Marielle Golden also scored her point on the flat to even her season record to 1-1.
The Independent Championship Tournament concludes on Saturday, with the final two meets starting at 9 a.m.
