BROOKINGS, S.D.- The South Dakota State women's soccer team played a dominating game against the Fort Wayne Mastodons Sunday afternoon, resulting in a 4-0 Jackrabbit win at Fishback Soccer Park.
A starting lineup of mainly seniors began the game strong for the Jacks. Senior goalkeeper Blaklee McMillen made her season debut, making two saves for SDSU and adding a shutout to her career record.
In the 39th minute of regulation, junior Madison Yueill notched the first goal of the game and her fourth of the season.
SDSU outshot IPFW 13-4 in the first half and was allowed three corner kicks.
The Jacks picked up more momentum in the second half, scoring the final three goals -- all wich came from seniors. A little more than three minutes into the second half, senior Dani Patterson scored the second goal of the game -- and her second of the season -- off a corner kick from sophomore Nicole Hatcher.
Only five minutes after Patterson's goal, senior Diana Potterveld attacked the Mastodon defense, once again scoring the third goal of the game, and her sixth goal this season. Freshman Brittany Jensen assistedon the goal.
The final goal for the Jacks came on a penalty kick in the 76th minute of play. Senior Katie McNeary sent the ball past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
“Today is just what we needed,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “I am very proud of how we responded from the loss to ORU to come out and put on a dominating performance.”
The Jacks took 16 shots in the second half to IPFW's five, totaling 29-9 shots in the game.
SDSU's record improved to 9-5-2 in the season, 4-1-1 in conference play. IPFW now stands at 4-12-2, and 2-4-1.
SDSU will play again Oct. 30 at Western Illinois. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m.
