MACOMB, ILL.- South Dakota State drops Western Illinois, 2-1, Friday to secure a spot in The Summit League Soccer Championships.
The Jacks' record improves to 10-5-2 in the season and 5-1-1 in conference play. The Leathernecks drop to 2-14-0 and 1-6-0.
Senior Diana Potterveld set the tone for the Jacks scoring the first goal only nine minutes into regulation and notching her seventh goal of the season.
Only two minutes later, freshman Brittany Jensen challenged the Leatherneck's backline again, taking a cross from Potterveld and successfully sending the ball past the keeper. This marks Jensen's first career goal.
The SDSU backline only allowed one goal from Western Illinois in the 39th minute of regulation. WIU player Caitlin Rerucha scored off a cross from Leatherneck Meagan Wilson.
Overall, the Jackrabbits outshot the Leathernecks, 16-12. Junior Nicole Inskeep tallied three saves for SDSU, holding the score at 2-1.
“I am proud of the team for coming out today and finding a way to get the result we needed to put ourselves in the conference tournament,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “There is still much to play for, but this was a big win for the Jacks.”
South Dakota State, the defending Summit League Championship team, clinched a spot in the 2015 championship playoffs with the win. SDSU will be hosting The Summit League Championships, Nov. 5 and 7, at Fishback Soccer Park.
Before returning home to prepare for the championship play, the Jackrabbits head to Indianapolis, Ind. to play IUPUI, Sunday, at noon.
