INDIANAPOLIS, IND. — The South Dakota State women's tennis team toppled Oral Roberts, 6-1, Saturday morning at the West Indy Racquet Club.
With the win, the Jackrabbits ran their season-long win streak to seven matches and improved to 9-5 (2-0 SL) on the season. The Golden Eagles fell to 6-9 (2-3 SL) with the loss.
"The girls were ready to play from ball one today," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "It can be tough to handle a quick turn around, especially after a good win, and our girls handled it perfectly."
South Dakota State won four singles matches in straight sets. Florencia Magni picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marizanne Bouwer at second singles while Ffion Davies bested Brenda Mercado Jove, 6-2, 6-1 at third singles.
Beatriz Souza and Elif Gabb won in commanding fashion at fifth and sixth singles respectively. Souza dispatched Nika Munoz, 6-0, 6-2, and Gabb blanked Kimberly Butler, 6-0, 6-0. At first singles, Iasmin Rosa secured her team-leading ninth victory of the dual season. After defeating Petya Simeonova in the first set, 7-5, she dropped the second, 6-4. But she rallied to win the third, 10-6.
In doubles play, the Jackrabbits scored three victories. Rosa and Davies won, 8-3, at first doubles while Souza and Tacy Haws-Lay won by that same margin at second doubles. Magni and Gabb shut out their opponents at third doubles, 8-0.
During its seven-match win streak, South Dakota State blanked their opponent three times and won by a 6-1 margin three times. The Jackrabbits will put their streak on the line Saturday, April 4 when they face defending Summit League champion Denver at 10 a.m. in Denver, Colo.
"We had the type of weekend we were looking to have," Engdahl said. "Now, it is our job to keep the momentum going."
