Head coach Dave Schrage earned his 100th victory at South Dakota State as the Jackrabbits held on for a 5-4 win over North Dakota State in Summit League baseball action Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
SDSU improved to 19-13 overall this season, including 8-6 in The Summit League. The Bison dropped to 8-20 overall, 3-11 in league play.
Trailing 1-0 after a solo home run by Ben Petersen in the top of the first inning, the Jackrabbits used a long ball of their own to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Matt Johnson lined Reed Pfannenstein pitch over the fence in right-center field, scoring Reid Clary ahead of him for a 2-1 Jackrabbit lead. Eric Danforth added a run-scoring single to plate Newt Johnson with an unearned run later in the frame to push the SDSU advantage to 3-1.
The Jackrabbits tacked on a run in the fourth with the aid of a lost flyball in the sun to go ahead 4-1 on a sacrifice fly by Clary.
Petersen doubled to lead off the Bison sixth inning, after which Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson left due to injury. Juan Gamez plated Petersen with a single off Jackrabbit reliever Andrew Clemen to trim the SDSU lead to 4-2.
SDSU responded in the home half of the sixth with a run on a two-out single to left center by Zach Coppola that scored Al Robbins, who led off the frame with a walk.
Gamez, who was 3-for-4, closed the gap to 5-4 with a towering two-run homer to left in the top of the eighth, but the back end of the Jackrabbit bullpen closed out the victory. Talon Jumper retired both hitters he faced to finish off the eighth and J.D. Moore worked around a two-out hit batter to earn his third save of the season.
Anderson struck out five, walked two and gave up two runs on four hits in five-plus innings to earn the win. Clemen added four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings as SDSU pitchers combined to fan 10 Bison hitters in the game.
Ringhofer was 2-for-5 to lead SDSU's seven-hit attack. Petersen was 2-for-3 as he and Gamez combined for five of the seven hits by the Bison.
The Jackrabbits will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
