South Dakota State connected on a season-high four home runs and received a solid starting pitching performance from Ryan Froom to defeat North Dakota State, 13-5, and complete a three-game series sweep Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits, who ran their winning streak to five games, improved to 20-13 overall and 9-6 in The Summit League. NDSU dropped to 8-21 overall and 3-12 in league play.
SDSU scored in each of the first five innings, including a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. The first three Jackrabbit batters reached on hits, including Jesse Munsterman, who delivered a single to right center to plate Paul Jacobson with the first run of the game. Zach Coppola later scored on a fielders choice.
The Jackrabbits' next four runs came via home runs. Cody Sharrow homered to left field to lead off the second inning, with Matt Johnson and Newt Johnson going for back-to-back home runs off Bison starter Trent Keefer with one out in the third inning. Reid Clary gave the Jackrabbits a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to straightaway center field.
Both of NDSU's third-inning runs were unearned following the lone Jackrabbit error of the game. Ben Petersen doubled in the first run and Taylor Sanders followed with a single to score Petersen.
Coppola pushed the Jackrabbit lead to 8-2 with a two-run opposite-field double in the fifth inning. He extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finishing the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Bison trimmed the cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh as Paul Funk delivered a bases-clearing three-run double.
However, the Bison bullpen suffered through a disastrous bottom of the seventh, allowing five runs on only one SDSU hit — a two-run single by Clary — as the Jackrabbits ended any hopes of a comeback. Bison relievers issued four walks and hit two more batters in the inning.
Froom struck out five, walked two and gave up five hits in 6 1/3 innings in picking up his third win of the season.
Clary, Newt Johnson and Sharrow each tallied two of the Jackrabbits' 11 hits.
SDSU continues its long homestand by hosting North Dakota at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
