South Dakota State scored in every inning it batted, including 11 runs in the fourth inning, as it ran its winning streak to six games with a 21-7 victory over North Dakota in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits, whose 21 runs and 21 hits were both season highs, improved to 21-13 overall. UND dropped to 12-17.
SDSU wasted little time to get on the scoreboard as Paul Jacobson, Zach Coppola and Luke Ringhofer opened the game with consecutive singles to lead to two runs. The Jackrabbits led 5-0 after two innings following a run-scoring single by Eric Danforth and bases-loaded walk to Ringhofer, which were sandwiched around Al Robbins scoring on a passed ball.
In the 11-run fourth inning, the Jackrabbits sent 16 men to the plate against four different UND pitchers. Jacobson opened the inning with a bloop double and Ringhofer followed two batters later with a two-run double to right field, giving him four runs batted in on the day with a pair of hits. After Jesse Munsterman delivered a pinch-hit single, Reid Clary singled in two runs, Matt Johnson hit a run-scoring double and Newt Johnson capped the scoring with an RBI single. SDSU tallied seven hits in the inning, including two by Jacobson, and also were the beneficiaries of three walks and two hit batters.
Meanwhile, Jackrabbit starter Chad Hodges turned in a strong performance that included eight strikeouts over five innings. The only run Hodges allowed was a solo home run by Sam Alt with two outs in the top of the third.
The Jackrabbits continued their onslaught in the late innings, including solo home runs by Newt Johnson and Philip Jacobson in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. Reserve Thomas McMacken chipped in with an RBI on his first collegiate hit, in the seventh inning.
UND scored in each of the last four innings against the Jackrabbit bullpen, including an RBI double by Jeff Campbell, who was 2-for-5, in the seventh.
Thirteen different Jackrabbit players recorded at least one hit. Paul Jacobson was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, with his brother, Philip, going 2-for-3. Newt Johnson ended the afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Coppola was 2-for-2, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. SDSU continues home action Wednesday against Dakota State. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
NOTES: SDSU leads the all-time series, 69-58-1 … the Jackrabbits scored their most runs in a game since putting up 24 against Western Illinois on May 22, 2010 … Coppola has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games, while Danforth extended his streak to 22 games … Coppola leads the team with 16 multi-hit games … the Jackrabbits' 21 hits were the most since recording 24 at Alcorn State (Miss.) on March 5, 2013 … SDSU improved to 9-2 at home this season
